July Campaign: #PurpleOceanDefenders

The whale is a meaningful animal to BTS and ARMY. BTS talked about the world’s loneliest whale in their song “Whalien 52”, and the whale also symbolized ARMY in the music video of “We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal”.

Let’s celebrate ARMY’s birthday month by protecting the whale’s home, ocean ecosystems, through the Ocean Defenders Alliance.

About Ocean Defenders Alliance

Founded in 2000, the Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA) is a marine conservation organization based in Orange County, California. ODA is committed to protecting near-shore ocean ecosystems from dangerous man-made objects such as abandoned fishing gear and plastics, and pollution.

Man-made debris such as fishing nets, traps, lines and plastic, abandoned fishing gear, trash, and improperly sunken vessels pose a huge threat to the survival of marine wildlife and the overall health of water bodies on our planet. There is an urgent need to make the world’s oceans debris-free.

ODA protects the seas by doing the following:

• They use their boat to transport its dive crew to the affected locations where the volunteers go into the water and collect debris through gear which they bring back to shore for proper disposal.
• They liberate animals such as lobsters, crabs and fishes who get trapped alive in the trash.
• They raise awareness about the plight of oceans through presentations at schools, expos, festivals and dive clubs, to encourage people to participate as volunteers and become an active part of the solution.
• They work closely with fishermen, restaurants, and the seafood community to enlighten them about the relevant issues and gain their participation in combating them.

Impact Of COVID-19 & Funding Needs

The COVID-19 restrictions made it difficult for ODA to visit affected locations. Now, ODA needs funds to take boats out to the affected locations and set up cleaning operations to make as many places debris-free as possible.
